Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions may be necessary when a tooth cannot be saved by fillings or root canal treatment. This often occurs when dental decay or a crack extends into the root beneath the gum.

The type of extraction required depends on the tooth’s anatomy and the individual patient. There are three basic types of extractions:

Simple Extraction

Simple Extraction

Performed on a tooth that is visible in the mouth. It involves loosening the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and removing it with forceps.

Sectional Extraction

Used for more complex cases where the tooth may need to be divided into sections for easier removal.

Surgical Extraction

Surgical Extraction

Necessary for teeth that are not easily accessible, such as impacted teeth. This procedure involves making an incision in the gum to access and remove the tooth.

During your appointment, our dentist will determine the best approach to ensure the extraction is performed in the easiest and most comfortable way possible.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are located at the very back of the mouth, behind the 12-year-old molars. They usually begin to erupt between the ages of 16 and 24. Due to their position and the fact that they are often impacted and difficult to clean, wisdom teeth can cause several issues:

Tooth Decay

Tooth Decay

Difficult-to-clean wisdom teeth are prone to cavities.

Food Impaction

Food Impaction

Food gets trapped around the wisdom teeth, leading to decay.

Pericoronitis

Pericoronitis

Inflammation of the gum covering the wisdom tooth.

These issues can lead to pain and infection, making extraction necessary. Our dentists are well-trained and experienced in performing surgical extractions, including most impacted wisdom teeth. The difficulty, appointment length, and cost of the procedure depend on factors such as the tooth’s location and angulation, the shape of the roots, and the proximity to surrounding structures.

    In-House OPG Machine

A full mouth panoramic X-ray (orthopantomogram – OPG) is usually required to assess wisdom teeth. At Dental Greetings, we have an in-house OPG machine, allowing us to perform and assess your X-ray during the same appointment as your consultation. This eliminates the need for a separate visit to a radiology centre, streamlining your care and providing immediate results.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth extractions are typically necessary when a tooth is too damaged to be saved by other treatments. Symptoms such as severe pain, infection, decay, or a cracked tooth extending below the gum line may indicate the need for an extraction. Our dentist will evaluate your condition and recommend the best course of action.

During a tooth extraction, local anaesthesia will be used to numb the area, ensuring you are comfortable and pain-free. The type of extraction (simple, sectional, or surgical) will be determined based on the condition of your tooth. Our dentist will explain the procedure and provide aftercare instructions to promote healing.

Wisdom teeth often cause problems such as food impaction, pericoronitis, and tooth decay due to their position and difficulty in cleaning. Removing wisdom teeth can prevent these issues and alleviate pain and infection.

An orthopantomogram (OPG) is a full mouth panoramic X-ray that provides a comprehensive view of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. It is essential for assessing the position and condition of wisdom teeth, helping our dentist plan the extraction procedure accurately.

Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the extraction. Simple extractions typically heal within a few days, while surgical extractions may take a week or longer. Following aftercare instructions, such as avoiding certain foods and activities, will help promote healing.

If you experience severe pain, prolonged bleeding, or signs of infection after an extraction, contact us immediately. Our team will provide guidance and, if necessary, schedule a follow-up appointment to address any complications.
